Ecuador Receives Container of Medical Supplies

On April 5th, MedShare’s Western Regional Distribution Center shipped a 40-foot container with hundreds of medical supplies destined for Canton Gonzalo Pizarro, Ecuador.

Dole Ocean Cargo Express generously donated the shipping of this container to the Ecuadorian port, including the tractor-trailer container. Below is a photo of the container before it left our warehouse in San Leandro, CA.

We’re happy to report that the container arrived in Ecuador the week of May 9. The hospital recipient sent photos of the container being unloaded, and we wanted to share these as they illustrate the full circle of MedShare’s work. See below…

MedShare Ships Second Container to Hospital St. Nicolas in Haiti

Haiti

MedShare celebrated a very special shipment to Haiti on Thursday, May 19, 2011, when a 40 foot container of medical humanitarian aid for Haiti was shipped out of the Western Regional Distribution Center.  The container is carrying over 11,600 lbs of donated medical supplies and equipment for Hospital St. Nicolas, such as cervical collars, electric beds, diapers, splints, gauze, syringes, an anesthesia machine, an infant warmer, and much more.

Dr. Stephen Lockhart, Chief Medical Officer at Sutter Health East Bay Region, introduced Chuck Haupt to the need for medical supplies and equipment at Hospital St. Nicolas, Saint Marc, Haiti shortly after the January 2010 earthquake. Dr. Lockhart and other medical professionals from Sutter Health went to Hospital St. Nicolas to treat the injured and sick. Subsequent to that first visit, he has returned three more times to aid patients in that community. See a short video here about Dr. Lockhart’s most recent visit to Hospital St. Nicolas.

MedShare’s long-time partner Partners in Health (known in Haiti as Zanmi Lasante) support St. Nicolas Hospital and coordinated this shipment with MedShare.  Thanks to all at PIH for facilitating this project, raising the money for the shipping, and handling the customs clearance and delivery to Saint Marc.

We are so very proud to partner with Sutter Health and Partners in Health on this second aid shipment to Hospital St. Nicolas. Joining us at the ceremony were members of MedShare’s Western Region Council, many volunteers, and 7th grade students from Corpus Christi School in Piedmont (who volunteered with us for the entire school year).

AWDF and Hope Floats Initiative Sends Container to Cameroon

Cameroon

On May 13,  MedShare’s Southeastern Regional Distribution Center loaded and shipped a 40 foot shipping container with medical humanitarian aid for Cameroon, West Africa.  This was a joint project organized by the African Women’s Development Foundation (AWDF) and the Hope Floats Initiative.

The container is carrying over 17,000 lbs of medical supplies and equipment, such as gauze, iodine, surgical instrument sets, emergency laryngeal airways, surgical masks, Patient Energy Transport vehicles, hospital beds, a surgical table, blood pressure monitors, and much more.

A large portion of the items will be donated to Limbe Regional Hospital in the Southwest province of Cameroon, where a recent outbreak of cholera has claimed over 98 lives, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.  The Hospital has been overwhelmed with cholera cases in recent weeks and desperately needs the additional beds, Drip Drop Oral Rehydration Solution and other donated items that will be arriving.

The other supplies that were shipped on the container are earmarked for use by a team of physicians and nurses traveling from the US and Nigeria to Cameroon on a medical mission organized by the AWDF and Hope Floats Initiative.  The team will be providing free medical care to needy families by setting up mobile surgical and consultation centers.

Please see below for photos of the container send-off celebration:

Thanks to Kimberly-Clark, MedShare Ships Container of Medical Supplies for American Nicaraguan Foundation in Managua, Nicaragua

Nicaragua

On Wednesday, May 11, a 40-foot container carrying donated medical supplies and equipment for the American Nicaraguan Foundation in Managua, Nicaragua was shipped out of MedShare’s West Coast Distribution Center.  This is the fifth container that MedShare has shipped to this recipient since 2003.

The American Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF) is a 501 c (3) not-for profit organization rated as a four star charity by Charity Navigator.  Their mission is to help the neediest sectors in Nicaragua by strengthening medical assistance, increasing educational attainment, building safe shelters, providing clean water solutions, promoting economic opportunity, and delivery humanitarian aid to impoverished communities all over Nicaragua.  For more information and to view an inspirational video about their important humanitarian work, visit the ANF website here.

In Nicaragua, 1 in 2 people live in extreme poverty, 3 in 10 kids are malnourished, and there is 1 doctor for every 2,700 citizens. To say that medical supplies and equipment are lacking there would be an understatement – these items are desperately needed.

The MedShare tractor trailer size container that shipped out today is carrying over 11,000 lbs of medical humanitarian aid items, including:

  • baby care kits
  • bandages
  • surgical drapes
  • arm slings and cast materials
  • surgical masks
  • syringes
  • laryngoscopes
  • pulse oximeters
  • an infant warmer
  • and much more!

A huge thanks to the Kimberly-Clark Kimnica S.A. office in Managua and the Kimberly-Clark Foundation for making this project possible with their generous sponsorship!

MedShare and UPS Foundation Ship Container of Medical Relief to Pakistan

Pakistan

On Monday, May 2, 2011, a 40-foot container carrying medical relief aid for Pakistan was shipped from MedShare’s Southeastern Regional Distribution Center in Decatur, Georgia.

Over 9,000 lbs of medical supplies and equipment we included on the container, including:

  • ambu bags
  • emergency airways
  • bandages
  • surgical packs and instruments
  • needles
  • syringes
  • endotracheal tubes
  • blood pressure monitors
  • laryngoscopes
  • sphygmomanometers
  • an electrosurgical unit
  • a ventilator
  • and much more!

These donated items will be distributed by the NGO International Relief And Development (IRD) to local health facilities  in the flood-affected districts of Punjab Province.  According to www.pakistanfloodresponse.com, “Pakistan’s current flood zone is an area the size of England. The waters stretch the distance from St. Louis to New Orleans, and the disaster currently affects 20.4 million people: more than the combined number of people affected by the 2004 tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.”

MedShare is proud to support IRD’s flood relief efforts on the ground in Pakistan with this shipment of medical supplies and equipment. Our sincere thanks to the UPS Foundation for sponsoring this humanitarian project.

Emory University Donated Beds Sent to Ecuador

Ecuador

On April 29, a 40-foot ocean container carrying 50 donated hospital beds and mattresses was shipped from MedShare’s Southeastern Regional Distribution Center.  The donations are on their way to Ibarra, a city in northern Ecuador.  The local municipality of Gonzalo Pizarro will be installing the beds in several rural health centers that have been affected by recent heavy seasonal rains, which have washed out roads and caused multiple injuries in the local populations.  These hospital beds are most urgently needed there!

Donated Hospital Beds

MedShare sends deep gratitude to the Atlanta-based Emory University  Hospital and Emory Midtown Hospital for this generous donation which will benefit so many needy Ecuadorian families.
