On Friday May 14, 2010, MedShare celebrated the send-off of a 40 foot container of medical supplies and equipment donations for several government-run hospitals in the West African country of the Gambia. Bansang Hospital, Janjanbureh Health Centre, Kuntaur Health Centre, Chamen Health Centre, Brikama-ba Health Centre, and Jahali Health Centre will be sharing the donated items. These facilities are mostly located in rural areas.
Frequent health problems they see in their patients are malaria, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. Electricity and water are often unreliable. Supplies and equipment are scarce. NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL in Atlanta, Georgia generously donated about 80 pieces of medical equipment for the container, including baby incubators, stretchers, surgical lights, bedside commodes, ECG monitors, electric beds, patient scales, wheelchairs and over-bed tables. Also, MedShare contributed several pallets of disposable medical supplies that the Gambian Ministry of Health requested, such as gauze, bandages, urinary catheters, IV sets, and gloves. Hopefully these supplies and equipment will help the Gambian Ministry of Health and the poor and vulnerable patient population it serves a great deal.
In attendance at the send-off celebration on Friday were Her Excellency Susan Waffa-Ogoo, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Gambia to the United Nations, Reverend Joe Beasley and representatives of the Joe Beasley Foundation, and a delegation of representatives of the Georgia Associations of Gambians. MedShare deeply thanks H.E. Madame Ambassador and all the rest for their support and commitment to this project! Hopefully this will be the first of many more shipments to come!
