On February 14th, MedShare will ship a container of medical supplies to Project Medishare’s maternal health clinic in Haiti. This marks the Western Region’s 50th container shipment.
Project Medishare for Haiti is a nonprofit dedicated to achieving quality healthcare and development services by sharing resources with its Haitian partners. MedShare is supporting Project Medishare’s new maternal health clinic by shipping two tractor-tailor size containers of medical supplies and equipment. The first container was sent in 2010 and the second container is scheduled for shipment on Valentine’s Day. Critically needed items such as hospital beds, suture, gloves, gowns, masks, thermometers, exam tables, laptop computers, and a baby incubator will all be shipped. The clinic is located in the Central Plateau of Haiti and will open this spring.
“MedShare’s staff and more than 5,000 community volunteers are excited to deliver this 50th shipment to our partners working in Haiti,” said Chuck Haupt, Executive Director of MedShare’s Western Region. “The new maternal health center will help decrease the maternal mortality rate in their community, as it is among the highest in the Caribbean,” said Haupt.
As the state’s first large-scale recycler, MedShare diverted 169 tons of supplies from California landfills in 2010 in cooperation with manufacturers and its 29 local partner hospitals.
“As MedShare’s Western Region continues to grow, we’re grateful to the Northern California community for coming together to support our mission of bridging the gap between surplus and need,” said A.B. Short, MedShare’s CEO and Co-Founder.
Since it opened in California in 2008, our Western Region has sent 49 containers of medical surplus supplies and equipment to developing countries around the globe. With this shipment MedShare will have shipped over 170 tons of medical relief supplies to Haiti since the earthquake struck in January 2010.
