From our thousands of volunteers to our amazing product and financial donors to the doctors and nurses in the hospitals and clinics we serve, the MedShare family is truly extraordinary. They represent a wide spectrum of ages, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic groups, occupations, villages, towns, cities and countries. Despite remarkable diversity, this family shares a uniform passion for the MedShare mission and works diligently to help us bridge the gap between surplus and need for medically underserved people across the globe.
About once a year, some members of the MedShare family travel together to visit our partners on the ground in a specific country MedShare serves. In past years, we have traveled to Kenya, Ghana, Ecuador and Guatemala.
Today, 20 of us are gathered in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for a four-day educational experience. Our group hails from New York, California and Atlanta. Most contribute hours of volunteer service on MedShare’s Board of Trustees or Advisory Councils. Together with Chuck Haupt, Executive Director of MedShare’s Western Region, I am very excited to lead this great group in visiting a number of hospitals, clinics and other development projects here in Haiti. Over the next few days, individual travelers will be sharing their experiences with you via this blog so that you can hear more about what we are seeing, learning and experiencing in Haiti. We will share with you thoughts on: What’s working? What’s not? Should we have hope for Haiti? How can MedShare best continue support local Haitian efforts to strengthen the fragile health care system?
Stay tuned – More to come!
