On April 29, a 40-foot ocean container carrying 50 donated hospital beds and mattresses was shipped from MedShare’s Southeastern Regional Distribution Center. The donations are on their way to Ibarra, a city in northern Ecuador. The local municipality of Gonzalo Pizarro will be installing the beds in several rural health centers that have been affected by recent heavy seasonal rains, which have washed out roads and caused multiple injuries in the local populations. These hospital beds are most urgently needed there!
Yesterday morning, May 3, 2010, MedShare shipped a 40 foot container of hospital bed donations for Foundation of Orthopedics & Complex Spine (FOCOS) in the West African country of Ghana. FOCOS is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1998 by Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, with the mission of providing comprehensive, affordable orthopedic and spine care to underserved communities. Since then, FOCOS has been coordinating large medical mission teams trips of volunteer surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and other medical specialists that travel from the US to Ghana two to three times a year to perform surgeries on underprivileged children and adults. FOCOS is also building an orthopedic and rehabilitative hospital in Accra. The 50 electric hospital beds and mattresses that were shipped on the MedShare container yesterday will hopefully be a big help to FOCOS in their work in Ghana.
Thanks to Emory University Hospital Midtown for donating the beds to MedShare, to Madame Nell Diallo, and to all the staff at the FOCOS USA and FOCOS Ghana offices for their hard work making this shipment happen. And a special thanks to Mr. Rob Oviatt and his MedShare Southeastern Regional Warehouse staff: Dr. Moctor Bayor, Mr. Mujahid Tawwab and Mr. Arthur Nalley. They spent many hours yesterday at the donor hospital loading each 400 lb bed on the container for FOCOS, which was quite a task!
